Racial abuse alleged, as garda superintendent faces criminal charges after row in Dublin nightclub

The superintendent has been charged with a Section 2 assault and a public order offence.

The high-ranking officer and has also been suspended from duty, Garda HQ has confirmed.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc) confirmed to the Sunday Independent that the DPP has directed the officer at the centre of the probe be charged following the garda watchdog investigation into the incident which took place in August 2023.

When contacted, Garda HQ confirmed that the “garda in question was suspended from duty in recent weeks”, adding that it referred the incident to Gsoc under Section 85 of the Garda Síochána Act following “an alleged incident involving an off-duty garda in Dublin city centre”.

It is within the powers of gardaí to place someone in handcuffs without arresting them
