The young pedestrian was killed on the Well Road in the town of Rathkeale on Saturday.

The dead woman, who was in her 20s, is believed to be a mother from the town.

Sources said that the woman had been positioned behind a set of gates at the entrance to a private yard in the town when a silver Ford Transit van allegedly struck the gates, seriously injuring the woman.

Gardaí were searching for the driver and the vehicle after the van failed to remain at the scene.

The woman had been transported to University Hospital Limerick in a critical condition but later died from her injuries.

The incident occurred outside a house on the narrow road at Bank Place in Rathkeale at around 12.15pm on Saturday afternoon.
