Retailers defend selling €8.99 turkeys this Christmas
A number of retailers including Tesco, Lidl and Aldi all offer a 3kg whole Irish turkey for €8.99.
However, IFA Poultry Chair Nigel Sweetnam has hit out at retailers for what he describes as selling at below the cost of production for suppliers.
“The marketplace needs serious correction, this cannot be allowed to happen. This has been the problem with Irish retailers where consumers expect cheap food, and want all the bells and whistles of environmental actions and bird welfare. That all does come, but at a price,” he told the Farming Independent.
“Our problem is not that they’re giving consumers value, we welcome that, the problem is that it has thwarted consumers’ expectation of the price of poultry.”
He said if retailers can sell at this price, “why would consumers pay over €70 for a premium product?”
In response, Lidl told the Farming Independent that these offers in no way impact the price paid to suppliers.
