Solicitor for Aoife Johnston’s family continues call for inquiry and says report into her death was ‘waste of time’

Damien Tansey told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that assessment was not a reflection of the man who carried out the report, former Chief Justice Frank Clarke. He also confirmed the Johnston family intends to meet with the incoming health minister and taoiseach once a new government is formed.

Mr Tansey said coming to “a truthful account of what happened” was made impossible by the limits placed on Mr Clarke’s investigation.

“At the very outset of his report, he indicated that he couldn’t make, for example, findings of fact, he couldn’t make adverse findings, and he couldn’t even resolve conflict where there were conflicting accounts from people that were involved in this tragedy at the coalface,” he said.

Aoife (16), from Shannon, Co Clare, died from meningitis-related sepsis at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) in December 2022. A verdict of medical misadventure was delivered by Limerick coroner John McNamara at an inquest earlier this year. The report carried out by Mr Clarke…
