Hugo Keenan and the Irish Sevens squad got a reminder of just how tough things are going to be in Paris this summer as they missed out on the Madrid Sevens tournament in heartbreaking fashion.

Having edged South Africa on Friday, Ireland lost to 26-21 Fiji in overtime this morning and needed a result against New Zealand to progress.

Leinster and Ireland full-back Keenan scored a late try to level things at 17-17 and give them a shot at winning it, but Seán Cribbin missed the conversion and New Zealand struck for the golden point to send Ireland out.

Earlier, the Ireland women also missed out on the final four as they followed up Friday’s loss to Australia with a 31-5 defeat to France that meant their Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe inspired 26-19 win over Fiji came too late.
