Three people die on Irish roads in one week as gardaí ramp up road safety for Christmas
It comes as gardaí have ramped up road safety enforcement operations in the period leading up to Christmas, when road users are at a heightened risk of being involved in a fatal or serious collision.
Almost 180 people have been arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant and over 2,244 drivers were detected for speeding offences between Friday, December 6 and Thursday, December 12.
Three people were killed on Irish roads in the same six day period and others have been seriously injured or received life-threatening injuries in 13 serious collisions.
A man died in a single-vehicle collision shortly after 7am last Sunday on the the N22 at Islandmore in Killarney, Co Killarney, while a woman in her 50s, a pedestrian, was struck by a car on the N25 at Stokestown in Co Wexford at around 7pm on Sunday.
A man in his 60s, who was also a pedestrian, died when he was struck by a car shortly after 6.30pm on Thursday evening at Main Street, Ballinrobe in Co Mayo.
