Taoiseach Simon Harris and Tánaiste Micheál Martin hold hour-long meeting on new Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael coalition

The two men will authorise their negotiating teams to meet together. It is intended that the teams will formulate an agreed way forward on policy.

Simon Harris, leader of Fine Gael, and Micheál Martin, leader of Fianna Fáil, also reviewed progress in discussions with Independent TDs.

Taoiseach Harris today met Galway East TD Sean Canney and Gillian Toole of Meath East, who is closely associated with senator Sharon Keogan.

The separate meetings with Independents who belong to the regional technical group will continue in the afternoon. The Taoiseach will speak with Verona Murphy of Wexford, followed by a meeting with Barry Heneghan of Dublin Bay North, who is associated with former disabilities minister Finian McGrath.

There is some suggestion that Ms Murphy could be interested in standing for Ceann Comhairle, which is not in the Government’s gift as it requires a secret ballot of all TDs.

Both Mr Martin and Mr Harris had separate phone calls today with Ivana Bacik
