Hundreds of people have been arrested in Northern Ireland for attempting to enter Great Britain by crossing the border from Ireland.

The UK Home Office confirmed a three-day Comby operation, aimed at cracking down on people smugglers, led to multiple arrests this week, The Guardian reported.

Operation Comby was launched in April to intensify the immigration controls implemented by Operation Gull – a joint operation between the UK’s Home Office and an Garda Síochána to stop the abuse of the common travel area.

This area allows only British and Irish citizens to travel without passports between the islands of Ireland, Great Britain, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

Immigration officials in the UK have said that criminal gangs are now charging people up to €8,000 for an illegal travel package that doesn’t involve crossing the Channel on small boats.
