Election 2024: Boxes open in count centres nationwide as poll suggests a tight race on the cards

Leader of People before Profit Richard Boyd-Barrett, Fianna Fáil Minister of Finance Jack Chambers and Aontu Party Leader Peadar Toibin have reacted to the exit poll numbers this morning.
Speaking on RTE’s Morning Ireland, Mr Boyd-Barrett said that “the historic decline of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael continues”.
“60pc of people don’t want to vote for them but the problem is that there isn’t an alternative,” he said.
He rejected the claim that People Before Profit would be solely reliant on Sinn Féin transfers for election, saying: “We have some very strong candidates like Conor Reddy who will be contending on his own merit in Dublin North West.”
Aontu leader Peadar Toibin was pleased by the party’s results thus far, saying that he anticipates “double the votes compared to the local elections”.
“We’ve surpassed People Before Profit and Independent Ireland and if the votes go the way we want we may well surpass the Green Party,” he said.
