It is alleged that independent candidate Philip Dwyer assaulted a man who was canvassing with People Before Profit candidate Kellie McConnell in Bray, Co Wicklow outside Holy Redeemer Church, on Main Street, on Sunday shortly after midday.

“Gardaí are investigating an alleged assault which occurred on the Main Street in Bray on Sunday morning, 24th November 2024,” a Garda spokesperson said on Thursday.

The incident was first brought to light after a video was shared on X (formerly known as Twitter) by Mr Dwyer, in which a heated exchange takes place as Mr Dwyer questions Ms McConnell and a colleague about abortion and transgender issues, incorrectly labelling the two women as being part of the Social Democrats.

The two people in the video were not canvassing for the Social Democrats. The election literature they are holding shows they are representing ‘People Before Profit – Kellie McConnell’, who is one of the people filmed.
