It was a little after half past nine on a chilly Tuesday evening in November. A warm bed beckoned; I had a good book on the go. Alas, the Prime Time Leaders’ Debate was about to start. With grim dutifulness, I reached for the remote control and turned on the TV.

It was immediately obvious that Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald had risked provoking the ire of Prime Time presenter Miriam O’Callaghan by turning up in pink.
