Fine Gael has said that party leader Simon Harris did not receive an invitation to take part in a leaders debate with Sky News ahead of the general election.
It comes after Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald accused Mr Harris of refusing to take part in a “proposed” debate.
Posting on social media, Ms McDonald said Mr Harris was “hiding” and claimed he does not like to be challenged on his record.
However, a spokesman for Fine Gael said Mr Harris did not receive an invitation to take part in a Sky News and Today FM debate.
Sources said that while talks were continuing about the possibility of a debate taking place, no formal invitations were issued.
A spokesman for the party said: “Fine Gael did not receive an invitation from Sky News for a debate.
“The Taoiseach looks forward to debating Mary Lou McDonald and other leaders on Monday and the following Tuesday.”
