Mr Martin said that law and order was emerging as one of the dominant issues of the November 29 General Election campaign.
Party canvassers have reported that issues surrounding crime, law enforcement, personal security and Garda resources are consistently being raised by voters on the doorsteps.
“People keep saying that we do not have enough Gardaí – and I agree with them,” he said.
Mr Martin said that Fianna Fáil believes the issue of law and order is so important over the coming years that the party will insist on holding the portfolio if it participates in any Coalition Government.
“We need more Gardaí on the streets and we are determined to deliver that for voters in Government,” he told Cork’s 96FM.
Mr Martin said his party has a plan to boost Garda personnel resources by 5,000 officers over the coming years.
