It’s understood that O’Doherty was keen for Higgins to stay on, a message that was communicated both before and after the cup final but lengthy talks on Wednesday concluded with a verdict that the club needed a fresh start.

Higgins’ relationship with other senior figures at City was strained, and the former Candystripes midfielder recognised that it was the right time to step away. He has a year remaining on his contract.
