Taoiseach insists ‘firm and compassionate’ migration policies will not emulate UK’s ‘despicable’ Rwanda plan
It came after the Government is set to sign a contract for private charter planes to be on standby to deport people who no longer have leave to remain in Ireland.
Mr Harris – speaking at a Fine Gael election rally in Cork – confirmed that his party will introduce new measures in respect of migration if part of a Government in the 34th Dáil.
These new measures, outlined as part of his party’s General Election 2024 policies, will include a charge for migrants in international protection measures who are earning an income as well as having a charter jet on standby for deportation cases.
The Taoiseach insisted that the new measures represent “common sense” and will offer a fair, firm and compassionate approach to migration.
He rejected any suggestion the new policies are comparable to the UK’s Rwanda deportation programme which he previously slated as both “despicable and stupid.”
Mr Harris said migration benefits Ireland but the system involved must be fair, firm and compassionate.
