Speaking with her trademark honesty, Mary says she collapsed 32 times because of alcohol abuse.

The legendary jazz star, who is a guest on a new culinary podcast, Under the Grill, was ahead of her time when it came to eating well.

She says: “I was into seaweed and stuff like that. I was always very conscious about food. I drank myself till I was in the Mater Hospital, 32 times for alcohol poisoning. I was on life support, you know, on the breathing machine.

“But I always attribute my remarkable recovery, physically, to food. The good eating for all those early years, because when I had children, I never drank and I breastfed and I was on the macrobiotic diet and everything was made at home. I do think that food is medicine.

“Whether it’s emotional or physical or both, and I think it kind of kept me alive, it definitely affected my liver. My liver was good. I got the break.”
