A device thrown through the window of an elderly couple in Derry has been confirmed to have been a viable pipe bomb that police say “could have badly injured or even killed’ someone.

A security alert got underway in the Limewood Street area of Derry at about 7.30pm on Monday and cordons were put in place while Army Technical Officers attended the scene.

Local politicians condemned what was branded a “shocking and distressing attack” on the couple’s home, with the device believed to have exploded.

On Tuesday morning, the PSNI confirmed the alert had ended.

PSNI Detective Sergeant Mark Gingell said: “The object, which has been declared as a viable suspected pipe bomb, has been removed and taken away for further forensic examination.

“It is believed that this device was put through the window of the house and has exploded. This has caused damage to the property, but…
