Pensioner who died in freak traffic tragedy named locally, hailed as ‘a saint’ for lifelong charity work
The woman – named locally as Mary Feehily (72) – suffered fatal injuries when, as she was standing alongside a man in his 60s, she was struck by a car near the main street of Charleville in north Cork shortly after 2pm on Saturday, November 2.
It is the second freak accident to occur involving pedestrians in Cork in the space of three weeks after a man in his 90s died after a collision involving a car in a supermarket car park in Fermoy last month.
The latest tragedy occurred as the pensioner was purchasing a GAA lottery ticket from a club official outside a supermarket in Charleville town centre.
Gardaí are investigating the circumstances of the tragedy when it appears a car mounted a footpath and collided with the man and woman who were standing talking outside the shop.
Pedestrians and local shop workers raced to help the two injured pedestrians.
Tragically, Mary Feehilly had suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to Cork University Hospital…
